Zip Cars

July 23rd, 2007

For a city dweller, owning a car can be more trouble than it’s worth. Finding parking is a pain and can cost more than the car itself, the subway is often faster, and getting behind the wheel is an easy way to enjoy a string of near-death experiences at the hands of your fellow citizens. If you’re a natural pedestrian who still occasionally needs a car, Zip Cars offers an alternative that’s convenient enough to almost make you forget about the cheerfully homicidal drivers you’ll be sharing the road with.

The system is simple: after signing up you have access to ZipCars’ stable of delightfully named vehicles (we’ve driven Jasmine, Morty, and Bo so far), which can be reserved online with just a few clicks at a moments notice. They offer a range of vehicles, including Minis, hybrids, pickups, and sports cars.

When you’re done with the car, just drop it off where you found it, leave the keys inside for the next driver, lock it up and go on your way. You’d think a village bicycle type of system like this would lead to beat-up old cars submerged in antique Cheetos packets with mysterious wet spots on the ceiling, but the ones we’ve rented are always clean and in great condition.

Aside from the signup fee ($25 bucks), you have to pay an anual fee of $50, and a fixed rate each time you use a car. This can be either hourly (usually between $10-$15 per hour) or daily (around $100 to $150 per day). If you need a car more than once a month or so, they also have a plan with a monthly fee instead of a yearly one, but with lower hourly and daily rates on the cars. And an added bonus: all cars come with a credit card you can use to pay for gas.
